Q1. I see some anglers pole fishing with 'Bulk Shot' close to the hook and others with it about 18" from the hook. Why does this vary?
A1. Bulk down would be for getting down quickly to better fish. If you know they are there. It is a good method when fishing for skimmers, which will give good lift bites. Using a farely high bulk enables you to present bait falling slowly through the last 18" where it can be intercepted by small fish.
Q2. Could you tell me when I should be using 'wide gape' hooks and crysal bend hooks?
A2. Wide gape are good for bigger baits ie. corn, pellets, worm and caster, etc. The crystals are ideal for small baits ie maggots, pinkies, squatt etc.
Q3. When fishing the stick float, could you tell when I should be fishing struno out shot and when I should be fishing 'bulk down' with droppers?
A3. I would nearly always use strong out shot on stick as it gives a good bait movement when holding back. the only time I would use bulk down would be for flat water when I would really want to hold bait very still.
Q4. How long hook lengths would you recommend for pole fishing?
A4. For small fish, on canals etc. 6" and for bigger fish and on rivers I'd use 10"
Q5. Is there a decent all round winter bait for match carp fishing?
A5. I'd say corn, it's visable and I recommend only one or two grains of feed per fish when cold and fishing is hard. Use a few more on milder winter days.
